A bare-boned independent drama with brief but meaningful touches of gentle comedy, Actual People is a poignant triumph, a simple but effective voyage into the mind of a young woman trying to find herself in a world that has somehow become hostile to those who refuse to find a place within its preconceived standards. As a debut, and a film in general, Zauhar's work here represents an auspicious start to a very promising career for someone who is likely to become an essential voice in contemporary cinema, if this film is anything to go by.

Leslie Felperin Guardian Zauhar has a forceful screen presence, and she draws out sparky performances from her cast. Rated: 3/5 Jan 16, 2023 Full Review Christian Zilko indieWire It’s the kind of muted slice-of-life film that only works because a delightfully complex character anchors it. Rated: B+ Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Brandon Yu New York Times The low-budget nature tends to expose the film’s amateurish qualities — the attempt at a vérité feel can fall flat, particularly through the acting. Nov 17, 2022 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan (Medium) Actual People captures the anxieties of adulthood and the pursuit of what the future holds for college graduates. Zauhar’s exploration of Riley’s self-realisation is the kind of gnawing feeling that young adults deal with every day. Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Heidy Morales Hye's Musings There is plenty to appreciate, laugh and relate to in 'Actual People', regardless of age. This indie film is certainly a great addiction to the mumblecore canon, and [it gives] a glimpse at Zauhar’s burgeoning talent as a performer, writer and director. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2023 Full Review Josh Bell Crooked Marquee Zauhar proves herself a worthy next-generation successor to Lena Dunham or Greta Gerwig.
