Not bad movie
That movie gave more love feelings to me than my Ex-girlfriends combined. This film makes the whole Indonesian movie industry seeing (in my tear eyes right after watching again) UNDERRATED. Story building, Cast, Music, perfect. (No I am not drunk nor heartbroken) My left eye does actually cry during the movie more than in Titanic and crashed into a pillow like a boat into an iceberg. Yes, it has the over-sweetening like in many Nusantara songs and love movies. BUT even, for example, the caretaker in the school was pure excellence. Yes, possible some think this review is Lebay, but you cannot be exaggerating to like this movie and Indonesian TOP CLASS! This movie alone shows the potential. The potential of this awesome country with an exciting future of film.

ADA APA DENGAN CINTA IS A CAPTIVATING INDONESIAN MOVIE (2002) ABOUT YOUNG LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP, WITH EXCELLENT CHARACTERS, MUSIC, AND DIALOGUE. AN A+.
In preparation for the upcoming Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2, I re-visited the original Ada Apa Dengan Cinta (AADC)..an Indonesian movie which was released way back in 2002, and arguably became a regional hit and restarted the Indonesian movie renaissance.
It is directed by Rudy Soedjarwo and produced by Mira Lesmana/Riri Riza, and starring Dian Sastrowardoyo and Nicholas Saputra.
I thought that being older, my liking for AADC might diminish, since it is primarily a story about high-schoolers. Significantly, I still find the film relatable and captivating. On paper, AADC's story of romance and friendship within teenagers should have been common and boring.
But AADC manage to rise significantly above other like-minded movies by having a tight plot, complex and relatable characters, and a magnificent soundtrack.
AADC revolves around Cinta (played by Dian), a headstrong, stubborn outgoing girl who runs her school bulletin board. Events intertwine her with a solemn introvert loner Rangga (played by Saputra)..and the movie proceeds with the organic development of their relationship, which starts with bickering/glowering enmity, and developed into something more. At the same time, the movie also explores about the effect that their relationship has on Cinta's friendship with her close-knit friends.
The characters are well-realized, even the minor/supporting characters. Cinta's friends are an interesting bunch; mature calm Alya, jock Karmen, beauty queen Maura, oblivious/innocent Milly, and hapless Mamat. The acting all around are excellent, especially Dian, Saputra and Ladya Cheryl who plays Alya, Dian's closest friend.
The chemistry between the main characters are strong; the developing relations between Dian and Saputra with their ups and downs, precociousness, angst and heartbreak is very relatable and organic.
Another major important aspect of the movie is the music, composed by Melly Goeslaw and Anto Hoed. It greatly sets the tone and mood of the different scenes in the movie. The music alone manage to evoke emotions like wonder and sadness, and segues well with the acting.
The cinematography is engaging and have imaginative shot angles; with lots of close-ups to focus on emotions. The colour palette is bright and cheerful, with marked contrast of rainbow colours.
One thing that might be a hindrance for non-Indonesian speakers to fully appreciate this movie is the heavy emphasis on Indonesian poetry, since this is a shared interest of Dian and Rangga and is a way for them to convey their feelings to each other. (All poems are written by Rako Prijanto). I felt a basic command of Bahasa Indonesia will enrich your experience with this movie. Otherwise, a comprehensive subtitle is needed.
TLDR, I highly recommend this movie to movie aficionados and hopeless romantics. It is a great movie with excellent characters and music/poetry, a memorable plot and dialogue.
A personal A+.
