Critics Consensus

Aeon Flux lacks the gravity-defying pace of its animated predecessor, and, despite some flash, is largely a dull affair.

Tasha Robinson AV Club A slick-looking action movie with too much exposition and a weighty, pretentious tone. May 13, 2006 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine An effort that's somehow both depressing and trivial. Rated: 1/5 Apr 1, 2006 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's made with some style, but flags after the first rip-roaring action moments. Rated: 2/5 Feb 18, 2006 Full Review Alberto Abuín Espinof The script is full of nonsense, apart from being unnecessarily complicated. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 28, 2019 Full Review Tim Brayton Alternate Ending It has the unmistakable hollowed-out, jerkily-paced feel that comes when scenes have been ripped out more for reasons of running time than narrative clarity. Stef R I really loved it but people pointed out that it was actually not a great movie and I was just enjoying watching a female protagonist kicking butt. I would have liked her even better without the love interest. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Bonobo J Charlize was as captivating as usual. The story multilayer and fascinating in concept, and the action well paced. Would be nice to see a director's cut some day. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Antoine C Very underrated film. We know now that the film was heavily cut by the producers but it still shows some amazing futurist locations and costumes. The choreography of Charlize Theron jumps are also pure visual beauty. If the second part of the film seems to rush to the smart ending we can guess what the film could have been without the producer's cuts. In some way, films are traces of projects and imagination and you need to enjoy the traces of the invisible film as much as the film itself on the screen. Aeon Flux is this kind of film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review peter S Theron is so beautifully sublime in this movie that it's hard not to take much joy in watching her. The cinematography has an anime feel that is quite pleasant. The story is solid and imaginative but it doesn't flow as well as it should. The sound is the movies weakness. I had to take it down during the action moments and turn it up for the dialogues. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Badger P I liked the movie to some extent but it is a little dull and weird making it hard for some to follow. I think the editing is what lowered the movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/21/23 Full Review Dr. A One of the most compelling visions for far-future technology I've ever seen in a film. Nothing looks like technology as we understand it, but rather tends to be naturalistic and integrated seamlessly into its surroundings. It is a clever realization that at the far end of the chain of progress, things won't look more technological, but less. The pacing and score give room for this world to breathe.
