Baba (Baba Camara) is a teenager who resides in a French-ruled Guinea village located on the the Niger River. While his mother, Kouda (Kouda Camara), nags him on occasion, village life for Baba is peaceful. His father, Madou (Madou Camara), however, hopes to procure a better life for his son. He sends the boy away to school in a nearby city, where he is to live with his rich uncle, Moussa (Moussa Keita). Although he feels out of place at first, Baba slowly adjusts to his expanding horizons.
