It has an interesting premise and admirable ambitions, but After.Life fails to deliver enough twists or thrills to sustain its creepy atmosphere. Read critic reviews

Dreary, peculiar, and pretentious - including the title. There have to be better ways to see Christina Ricci naked, and without an open head wound.

Well, I went in to After.Life not really knowing what it was about... I still don't really know what it's about. And I really don't think a second viewing would make it any better. Not even a Taken type of film where they've just given Liam Neeson an excuse to be totally BAMF at everyone, After.Life seem to be more about getting Christina Ricci's (Above Left - Black Snake Moan, Monster, Prozac Nation, Sleepy Hollow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Addams Family Values) kit off and being either unnecessarily bizarre, or not bizarre enough. Where I can appreciate After.Life is in that firstly, a naked Christina Ricci walking around a mortuary manages to get pulled off in a wholly not awkward way, secondly it was a perfectly interesting idea (if poorly executed) and finally the fact that there was a little bit of fucking originality here. It's not a remake, or a reboot, a prequel or a sequel, a book adaptation or a shameless ripoff, it's just a first time movie made by some lady, it'll probably drop off of the face of the earth in a matter of months, but still, good on her! Unfortunately, After.Life is entirely let down but the fact that nothing happens! Honestly, a 97 minute running time is not exactly an epic saga, but it's ample amount of time to have something happen. Hell, Trick 'r Treat tells four great, separate story lines in less time than that. I love Liam Neeson, I don't hate Christina Ricci, and Justin Long is one of the only "those actors" that I can stand (Seth Rogen, Will Ferrel, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Adam Sandler, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse... You know, those actors...) but it unfortunately just wasn't enough to get the film off the ground. Sorry After.Life, I really wanted to enjoy you, but there just wasn't enough going on one way or the other. Maybe next time Ms. Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, maybe next time... 49% -Gimly

After.Life is a well constructed supernatural horror film that is very original in its idea. The strength of the film lies with Liam Neeson's powerful performance as Mortician Eliot Deacon who has a gift of talking to the dead. I thought that the film was a breath of fresh air in the genre, and it was different considering all the remakes. With great direction from Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, After.Life is a creepy horror films that should appeal to fans of the genre. With a great cast at hand, Vosloo delivers a unique and different film that is very much underrated. The mix of the supernatural and surreal elements helps create a terrific film that is definitely worth watching. What made this film really good was that it relied on atmosphere rather than shocks to create its horror, and it works very well. There's a very well thought out plot that will keep you guessing from start to finish and though it has its imperfections, this is a better film than what most critics have written about it. In other words, this is not a work that should be easily dismissed. A few elements could have been reworked; nonetheless it is an effective chiller that displays a very creepy and effective Liam Neeson which makes up for the film's flaws. If you love something different in the horror genre, give this film a shot, this is a work that is engaging, well directed and has some good performances. However, like I stated previously, Neeson is the one that makes this such a thrilling and eerie viewing experience. After.Life may be imperfect, but it's certainly better than most horror films that come out nowadays. As a low-budget film, this is one that is very well done and should satisfy any fan of the genre.

A genuinely creepy film that leaves one wondering, is she really dead? This viewer liked the fact that the answer to that question is never made entirely clear. The ambiguity leaves room for different interpretations. Either Eliot (Liam Neeson) is a tortured visionary who can talk to the dead, or he is a sadistic gleaner of souls who slowly mesmerizes his victims into believing they are dead. Maybe he is both. A brave performance by Christina Ricci as the "dead" woman, Anna, and a very emotional role for Justin Long as Paul, her boyfriend. Some nudity (no full frontal) and a minimum of gore, but the overall tone was sinister and left one pondering the questions of life after death.
