Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times [It takes] on not only a classic piece of literature but also one of the most iconic films in the history of moviemaking, a challenge that debut feature writer-director Hugh Gross simply doesn't have the resources or imagination to match. Rated: 2/5 Aug 10, 2012 Full Review Justin Chang Variety Writer-director Hugh Gross' wooden if well-meaning indie has its charms, but may leave over-imaginative tots feeling patronized rather than captivated. Aug 9, 2012 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Writer/director Hugh Gross is certainly giving it his best shot in creating a heartfelt, family friendly film. Rated: 2.5/4.0 Sep 1, 2020 Full Review Renee Schonfeld Common Sense Media Sweet, but muddled postscript to Oz with mild suspense. Rated: 2/5 Aug 16, 2012 Full Review Read all reviews

Chris M This is AWFUL! If you watch the trailer, you think it's going to be a "Neverending Story III" plot going on, that Oz characters are coming to Kansas to find Dorothy, which could have been fun. But NOPE! She's just CRAZY. None of this is real and all the parts from the trailer is just her imaginary friends telling her a story of how they got there, none of which happened. As they just appeared in the library where most of the movie takes place. Another think, why would a school councilor not have an office and speak to her in a place that could be used by students or teachers? To make matters worse, the ONLY shot of Oz in the movie was filmed in a quarry. True, Sentai and Doctor Who filmed in quarries before. But neither was suppose to be a magical land with the digging equipment clearly seen in the background. L. Frank Baum wrote 14 books and none of them by this low budget loser. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The story is a compelling and creative one. Cinematography was beautiful and the primary cast was excellent, especially Jermel Nakia and Jordan Van Vranken. The scene in the library and their dialogue was heartfelt and moving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member My 8 yr old Niece and I are big fans of anything "Wiz of Oz", we have seen many versions of the movie and read several versions books. After struggling to stay awake, at least I did, and much discussion after it was finally over my Niece agreed that that was the worst crack at making Oz that we have ever seen. We thought "Return to Oz" was strange.... well for the words of a Child this was "WAY STRANGER". If I wanted to be bored out of my skull and listen to people tal and talk, it seems that is all they do, I would have gone to my Grans Knitting Circle. There is very little to NO action in this movie and pretty much the only funny part was when they wanted to adopt all the Lions, adorbs!! Other than that it is up to you to watch. Oh and if you have insomnia or you want to paralyze someone into a coma than this movie is for you. We would've given no stars but Niece wanted to give half a star for Toto's acting. Brightest Blessings. I.. do not have much to say strictly because it was that bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member This scared the crap out of my little sisters. Don't get it for kids.
