Critics Consensus

Afterimage's punishing narrative pays dividends through Andrzej Wajda's still-formidable control and a message that, while certainly grim, is undeniably worthy.

Brent McKnight Seattle Times Deliberately paced, bleak and a touch repetitive, Afterimages is a swan song from one of the greats, who, much like his subject, leaves viewers with a treatise on how to look at the world. Rated: 3/4 Jun 15, 2017 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor Wajda brings such a controlled fervor to this portrait because it's clear that, like Strzeminski, he identifies as a dissident in dangerous times. Rated: A May 26, 2017 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times "Afterimage" feels vividly connected to the Polish auteur's beginnings, yet also acts as the kind of haunting close that sums up a life. May 25, 2017 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema 'Afterimage' may be Strzemiński's bio-pic, but the images of endless breadlines, drafty hospital beds, and cigarette smoke hanging in the cold Polish air come across like memories tattooed on Wajda's brain. Rated: 3.5/5 May 14, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Wajda's film is perfectly well-made and much of it rings immediately true... Jul 8, 2020 Full Review Jacob Oller Vague Visages Wajda's loving examination of heroes has reached its logical conclusion in Afterimage, with the study of Strzemiński as unforgiving as the winter. Irene M It was great to see Bogulslaw Linda, and I learned much about both post WWII poland and modern art. and, now that I have been doing duolingo, i think I am even picking up more polish vs depending on the subtitles! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Audience Member It could be a wonderful movie about socialism impact on art in the twentieth century, but it is ruined by the terrible acting of Nina Strzeminska (B. Zamachowska) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member 4 1/2 Stars. Incredibly important piece of history is shown in this film, which also happens to be Wajdas very last film; The film doesn't offer much hope but definitely gets it's writer/directors deep concerns across against blind nationalism. I haven't seen any other Wajda film *hides* so I can't compare his other works to this, but I hear it fits perfectly in his filmography of political Polish films. The film is a little stagey but is meant well and is personal that it doesn't come across ham fisted at all really. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member So sad that I've just watched Wajda's last film. It isn't my favourite of his, but it's still essential Wajda. Very emotional. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The last movie by Wajda didn't disappoint. One man that follows his principles even if it puts him against the whole communist system. Supporting cast and their stories are flat but it might be because of great acting of Boguslaw Linda. Strong performance by Linda playing disabled and burned out by his fight against the system artist. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
