Harold G Close to the best of his movies Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It's hard to go wrong with Errol Flynn but this movie tries. With inexcusably tame battle sequences and some particularly noticeable fake sets and models, Against All Flags cannot compare to Flynn's earlier swashbucklers. Maureen O'Hara is suitably fiery as pirate captain Spitfire but Anthony Quinn does not make for a particularly menacing villain. The subplot involving a captured Indian princess is uncharacteristically silly but is surprisingly founded in history. Still the movie doesn't come off quite as ridiculous as it should, probably because an experienced Flynn knew how to steer it in the right direction. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Tom M Another great Flynn swashbuckler. But make no mistake, this is Maureen O'Hara's film. In a 1952 movie, she's the captain of her pirate ship AND she does her own sword-fighting scenes ! And she's stunning while she does it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/03/20 Full Review Geoffrey S I've really enjoyed a lot of Errol Flynn's movies but this one doesn't make the grade at all for me. The costumes would look better in a children's pantomime and the actors direction is very poor with leads delivering lines standing with their hands behind their backs too often. It also looks like poor Errol's vices and life's pressures had caught up with him, looking puffy and older than his years. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/18 Full Review Audience Member This is the type of rompy pirate ship adventure for which Errol Flynn was perfectly suited to, and his persona here helps raise an otherwise average storyline. There's a funny moment towards the end when he's referred to as a young man by someone who looks just as old and weary as the lead looks. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Young Maureen O"Hara! Intoxicated Errol Flynn! Men in tights in swashbuckling action! I read Flynn broke his ankle doing his own stunts and delayed the finish of the picture. Essential pirate genre viewing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
