Deborah Young Hollywood Reporter Sonthar Gyal makes sensitive use of Tibet's great scenic beauty which D.P. Wang Weihua turns into a magical landscape of rolling green hills and snowy peaks, donkeys and tractors, and ancient customs that seem deathless. Audience Member The pilgrimage is only the backdrop; secular emotions are the theme. Religion has little impact on the characters and is rarely even the focus of long shots. Is this the Tibetan director's self-interpretation, or is it a deliberate attempt to de-spectacularisation? Interesting, and at the exact opposite ends of the spectrum from <Horse Thief> (1987).
