What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox do their best, but they're trampled by Rob Cohen's frustrating direction and a tasteless, lazily written screenplay.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... Alex Cross is certainly the weakest of the series, which reportedly will continue with Perry in the next film. God help us all. We can only hope for the best with that one. Rated: D Sep 7, 2017 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Time Out [Perry] has rarely been less convincing than when locking and loading from his home arsenal or dangling from a decaying Detroit edifice. Rated: 1/5 Nov 27, 2012 Full Review David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture Alex Cross is coarse, punishing, and, in all the ways that matter, conscienceless ... Oct 22, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This is an agonizingly unoriginal yarn about another wise detective hunting another ruthless sociopath. Rated: 0.5/4 Sep 23, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Some ingredients are there for what could’ve been a good movie. But the ingredients themselves don’t equal a fine dish. Rated: 2/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson "Alex Cross" is a lazy and uninspired attempt. Patterson's readers will tell you, the title character is a ripe and rich literary character with many incredible stories and thrilling stories to tell. He deserves better than this uneven effort. Kurt N I rented this movie based on the scene in which the Matthew Fox character shoots a rocket from the commuter train. Other than that, this movie is unadulterated crap! I have never seen a Matthew Perry film until this one. He is a terrible actor along with the rest of the ensemble. The screenwriters must have a taken too many hits to come with this haphazard screenplay. I feel sorry for Mr. Fox as he clearly lost a great deal of weight and worked his ass off in the weight room to achieve the physique he has in this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Kevin K Just another unoriginal detective series that quickly becomes predictable. There is no originality in the writing, acting or visualization. Don’t waste your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Korra N Tyler Perry & Matthew Fox were great casting choices, but the poor direction, awful editing and an even worse script keep this movie from being just passably entertaining. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Lloyd S Didn't like it. It was almost boring and dumb. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Jacob B PROLOGUE: Well, this certainly wasn't the direction I was expecting Jack Shephard's character arc to go after that big twist in Lost S3's ending scene but hey, at least Matthew Fox seems to be getting a kick out of playing someone who's not trying to fix everything. REVIEW: Not really a complete trainwreck but hardly a good movie either, Alex Cross does have good performances and a few decent scenes of suspenseful or tearjerking moments but the eye-rolling dialogue, bad action scenes and predictable story make this adaptation of the James Patterson bestseller a mostly-forgettable film that makes the Morgan Freeman films' merits stand out more. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Nathan W I have to partially disagree with the critics on this one. I thought the direction was one of the saving graces of this film. Because it was a fairly good looking picture. The sets were nice, lots of different locations, and decent cinematography. It's just that, what was filmed wasn't all that interesting. You know, we have a detective that's so good at his job, that all the answers just come to him. (Things happen so easily that their not believable or the least bit exciting). Our "bad guy" doesn't feel menacing at all and his motivation isn't really made clear. The script was underwhelming, the plot didn't always make sense, and everyone was mostly lacking any discernable emotions. The cast was okay for the most part... No "big" names but a lot of familiar faces. I will say that things got a little better in the second half of the film. You could actually tell that characters were feeling ways about stuff for a change. But the story was still so uninteresting and messy that was hard care what was going on. A lazy attempt at a cop movie, that was simply going through the motions. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
