      Critics Consensus

Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker is strictly children's fare, as it lacks originality, excitement, and believabiltity.

Drew H Amazing movie must watch Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/23 Full Review Simon S Excellent action scenes, witty dialogues, good entertainment. Pity that the film failed in theatre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/23 Full Review Audience Member A guilty pleasure film of mine don't know why I enjoy it the directing isn't great and I don't particularly like many of the actors but I watch it once a year at least Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Rappids J Entertaining garbage. Stephen Fry and Ewan Mcgregor were good though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/22 Full Review Audience Member A worthy adaptation of the (brilliant) book while sometimes lacking originality and emotion ultimately it does the Alex rider name justice Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Stuck deciding whether to be either a darker-than-average family-oriented spy film - a surprisingly popular subgenre in the early 2000's - or just lighthearted counterprogramming for kids too young to see either Casino Royale or Mission Impossible III, Stormbreaker is an adaptation that didn't work. The acting's good, there's some decent action and camera angles and I never felt like the adaptation was half-assed, something that's probably helped by having the author of the books penning the screenplay. But the goofy moments, bizarre editing choices (Alicia Silverstone vs. Missi Pyle comes to mind), groan-worthy Nintendo DS product placement, never committing to the darker aspects of MI6 recruiting a teen soldier (the books, which I've never read, apparently explore the psychological aspects of this, not unlike Neon Genesis Evangelion), Ewan McGregor being wasted as just a cameo that doesn't make much of an impression to count as a one-scene wonder and implausible plot make it hard to see whether it wants to grow with the audience like Harry Potter was doing at the time or try to keep the dying Spy Kids-era niche audience that was moving on. It had its moments but it's easy to see why Alex Rider's first movie remained his only big-screen adventure. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
