Synopsis
With the patronage of Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Alfred Laliberté -- an impoverished young sculptor -- travels to Paris to hone his artistic skills at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Upon his return to his native Quebec, Laliberté continues to struggle in poverty until he receives his first commission -- for a state-funded sculptural work. Soon, Laliberté begins to establish himself as a master sculptor who can deftly meld contemporary social documentary with timeless allegory.
