Kevin Carr 7M Pictures There is a place for the BBC's Alice in Wonderland, but for me, it's more for historical significance and a quite impressive gathering of respected actors in one film. Rated: 2/5 Feb 5, 2015 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film A melancholy and, in places, excruciatingly slow take on the tale with virtually all the comedic moments pared away. Joshua S Reminded me of a bad acid trip with people I didn't really like. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Audience Member This late 60's BBC production of "Alice in Wonderland" is an interesting, if somewhat flawed adaptation. It run barely over an hour, so it really focuses on the highlights of Carroll's novel filling the gaps with strange, almost abstract scene transitions. It opts for a very stripped down approach ... none of the actors playing animals are in animal costumes. Everyone is dressed for a BBC Victorian drama. (In a truly inspired touch, the Cheshire Cat is played by an actual cat.) What this allows this version to do is focus on the inspired performances of the key scenes by the truly astonishing cast ... Michael Redgrave as the Caterpillar, Leo McKern as the Duchess, Peter Cook as the Mad Hatter, Michael Gough as the March Hare, John Gielgud as the Mock Turtle and Peter Sellers as the King of Hearts. (Eric Idle also pops up in a tiny role with no lines.) This may not be the best version of this story that exists, but it's the best version of individual scenes ... I have yet to see a better version of the tea party. In a very late 60's touch, Ravi Shankar provides a good, but not very apt score. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Young Alice falls asleep on a riverbank and dreams of a Wonderland full of nonsense characters and events. This BBC television version of "Wonderland" has no anthropomorphic animals or colorful sets---the White Rabbit is just a guy and the Cheshire Cat is a real house cat, and the movie's in black and white in natural settings. Unexpectedly, the story turns more dreamlike thanks to this restraint, and Ravi Shankar's hazy sitar score gives the production an additional psychedelic sheen.
