Mark H All American is not just essential viewing for aspiring athletes, particularly girls and young women fighting for their place in competitive sports, it’s a deeply human story that transcends its arena. Because Altschul tells the story with such deft care and disarming intimacy, the film will resonate with anyone looking for a reason to believe in perseverance. Watching these three young women find courage and composure as they chase their dreams is profoundly inspiring. Altschul builds through multiple narrative layers that give the film a powerful emotional thrust - the main characters must navigate the weight of family expectations, cultural dynamics, internal battles with self-doubt, and the nervous anticipation that comes with competitive sport. As the journey toward the national championships tightens, the stakes become epic and deeply personal. And (no spoiler here!) the eventual aftermath was not what I expected and surprisingly, deeply emotional. What truly elevates All American, is Altschul’s craft and experience behind the camera. His unobtrusive presence allows for remarkable intimacy and subtle beauty. The soundtrack underscores the emotional terrain beautifully, and stark black-and-white animated sequences add an unexpected poetic dimension. This is a masterful sports documentary, one that stands comfortably alongside Hoop Dreams and the finest ESPN-style classics.
