Critics Consensus

A sorry swan song for the talented Chris Farley, Almost Heroes is a directionless comedy that doesn't even come close to triumph.

Joe Heim Seattle Times Unfortunately, Farley's unintended farewell is hardly memorable. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 15, 2014 Full Review Paul Tatara CNN.com All of the guys on the expedition are dumb, and they say and do dumb things in dumb ways, dumbly. Jul 15, 2014 Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader This 1998 comedy set in the early American west isn't unwatchable, just bad. Jul 15, 2014 Full Review Serena Donadoni Metro Times (Detroit, MI) There's a difference between a stupid movie and a movie populated by stupid characters, and director Christopher Guest shows that distinction with Almost Heroes. Rated: 2/5 Jul 15, 2014 Full Review Maitland McDonagh TV Guide The gags rely heavily on boogers, bird poo and sheep dung, and Farley falls down with monotonous regularity. Cortland K I liked it. It was funny. Classic Farley and Perry. It got bad reviews, but it's timeless humor. It's a lot better than the garbage coming out recently. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Brenda R This movie is absurd, utterly ridiculous, and I could not stop watching it and laughing my butt off. I don’t care for comedies but I watched this movie twice in a row. That’s how much I loved it. Not sure who dumped the crabby flakes onto the laps of the “critics” but this movie isn’t at all as bad as they’re saying it is. Did I wince a couple of times with Chris Farley doing a little too much? Yes absolutely, but frankly this is a gem of a movie that could one day be a cult classic once more people get a hold of it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Ramdom L I really enjoyed watching this movie. This movie comedy is indeed soft compare to other of that time. But it wasn't that bad as other people say. Its just fun and content to watch this good light comedy film!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Jeremy C I understand that this movie was critically panned but I find it a hilariously quotable movie. I still watch this rather regularly and still love every minute. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/24 Full Review Augustine J Almost Heros is a not great, but it still has a couple of good moments. Chris Farley is obviously the main reason to watch this movie, and he does a good job. Matthew Perry is a fine enough co-star. This movie is decent, it's not a hidden gem or anything like that, but it's alright. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review Keely D This movie showcases classic Christopher Guest. I can see why it fell flat with some viewers — it is extremely silly and there is quite a bit of physical humor. But that's what Chris Farley was amazing at — physical humor. This movie is very quotable and enjoyable to rewatch. It may have some pacing issues, but overall this is just a fun flick featuring some very funny people.
