Audience Member This is not an almost perfect movie. It's an almost perfectly bad movie. It's not a cheaply made movie. It's a well made movie but it has no real theme. It was supposed to be a comedy about a first time director who takes his movie to France and has it confiscated by the French Government because it hasn't been viewed by the government censor. This supposedly actually happened to George Lucas in the early 1970's. When they cut the movie they made the movie about the love affair between the Monica Vitti character and the Keith Carradine character. Unfortunately there are no love scenes or sex scenes so the affair is all talk. So the affair has a beginning and an ending but not much of a middle. The back story about the confiscated movie has some funny parts but they are mostly inside jokes that only people in the motion picture business would understand. There's no chemistry between the two lovers. The one good thing about the movie is all the cameo appearances by famous people from the 1970's they show up playing themselves. They were trying to capture the atmosphere of the Cannes Film Festival. They didn't have enough to make the movie that interesting. They didn't incorporate it into the story of the movie.
