Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle [Menchaca's] malicious control, the way he shifts from a damaged bird of a man to a hulking beast, helps put Alone away from the pack of middling modern slashers. Rated: 3/5 Sep 25, 2020 Full Review Kevin Crust Los Angeles Times Top-tier performances from Jules Willcox and Marc Menchaca provide 98 minutes of heart-pounding diversion. Sep 21, 2020 Full Review Angie Han FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Doles out just enough information and just enough plot twists at just the right pace, giving you just what you came for. Sep 19, 2020 Full Review Dave Golder Radio Times Alone is a minor triumph of style over substance. While many of the plot beats feel familiar, some top-notch acting and superbly edgy direction from John Hyams help elevate the material, and the peach of an ending is well worth the wait. Rated: 3/5 Sep 7, 2023 Full Review Jessica Scott Nightmarish Conjurings [Alone] is a taut and satisfying tale of survival that rewards viewers for bearing the non-stop tension and making it through to the other side. Dec 7, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s a simple premise and director John Hyams wrings out every drop of tension while once again proving that when it comes to cinema less is often more. Christian B It's a failed attempt at being a slasher type film with the protagonist actually making "reasonable" decisions throughout. At times, the protagonist does make reasonable decisions. More often than not, you will be shouting at the screen over the absurd choices she makes throughout, especially in key moments. Additionally, it seemed to need to draw out the run time by having scenes take place for far longer than is necessary to communicate what is being said. There's no major artistic reason or impressive performance behind it, instead it's a person talking for far too long over and over again. It keeps you interested enough to keep watching with how the premise plays out, but consistently fails to actually do anything actually interesting. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Audience Member Once again i am in disbelief how a movie which is average at best managed to receive such a good score. the acting from the main antagonist is decent , however the film has blaring plot holes and relies on poor writing to continue the story. Numerous decisions made by the character are unbelievably stupid . There were many moments where i felt that the behaviour and decisions made by characters was flimsy and unrealistic, however i felt the main let down was the countless plot holes such as the tyre on her U-haul only bursting once she was conveniently isolated in the forest despite being slashed completely with a knife. The fact that the kidnapper left the keys in the key hole and the door had a gap large enough beneath it for the main character to place a rag beneath to drag the key from underneath the door towards her. How the girl manages to run into the man multiple times while in a forest is completely implausible unless the forest is the size of a football field. Every prevalent event in the film is accompanied by some sort of inconsistency or majorly unrealistic aspect . The suspense and thrill of the film would be incredible if you were able to suspend any common sense or expectations of human behaviour. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Steven C Very scary. Convincing acting. Realistic. Great scenery. Keeps you glued to the screen with constant twists and turns. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review john s Lazy writing. When you have to rely on the main character to do the stupidest things to move the story along, that’s a pure sign of lazy writing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Mr. p I'm a old man i like it i want to be on the show Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Ari V I wouldn't call it particularly deep, original or creative and the last fight scene, though decent, is something of a stretch. That aside however, it's no nonsense delivery is appreciated, while some of the Menchaca scenes are downright special. 3.25/5 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
