This is a very eventful period film that covers a lot of storytelling ground and is acted with forthright confidence. Go to Full Review

The decades-spanning sprawl Quillévéré attempts is ambitious, but absent her usual passionate attachment to her characters, it feels like they are skittering across the surface of history, rather than living, lying and loving within it. Go to Full Review

Along Came Love feels like a less distinctive offering than Quillévéré’s previous films. Still, it’s classy, well-acted and engaging throughout. Go to Full Review

Although Along Came Love has some major flaws, it’s a well-directed, well-acted piece that I’m glad I could see...Quilléveré is more successful in her story of Madeleine (Demoustier), perhaps because it’s the story closest to her. Go to Full Review

Sam N Jun 25 Along Came Love is a frank, well-acted melodrama about two people bound by secrets they can’t quite name. Shame and desire simmer under real affection, stifled by guilt and repression. It’s more explicit than its rating suggests and emotionally direct throughout. I wish I’d skipped the trailer—it gave too much away—but the film still held my attention and moved me more than once. See more Grahame F Jun 21 A film about repressed desires and the censorship of others. Lush and well acted, it starts promisingly. But from the moment we shift into the post war excesses of a bar in a town far from where the two main characters meet, it ceases to be delicately observed and lived, and becomes cruder, more superficial. We don't really get into their heads apart from overdosing on their sexual frustration. There is little insight into love and loyalty. The question that torments the son crops up occasionally, initially very convincingly, but is condensed to a cliché when it could have been explored more subtly within the relationships. For a film seeking to be candid, I thought it was selectively so in the way it critiqued the past. See more Read all reviews
