steve d The two stars are a blast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Quick and to the point. But maybe too much so. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member What I liked about this movie was it shows what can happen with a limited budget. Found out that Carry Grant has more friends and closer relationships with people on a British 5 Pound budget a month than when he was rich without a job. I liked the film for it's story and would recommend the film to others. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member "Herein, a nearly transparent crowd pleaser, only a short story actually, of a playboy who learns about "what's important in life" from "the regular people" when he takes a medically advised year off from his sizeable inherited fortune. This sort of idea was a popular (and profitable) theme in mass entertainment: that working stiffs understood life better than the swells. There are no surprises here, only the charm of the time (if the Great Depression can be expressed as charming) and the performers delivery, lead by Grant himself. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Eh . . . don't waste your time. This was one of Cary Grant's early films, before he hit it big. There are so many out there that are much better. This was just dumb, even for the 1930s. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member The Amazing Quest of Earnest Bliss stars Cary Grant as the aforementioned playboy who has recently begun to have a nervous breakdown. He can't seem to sleep and is constantly stressed leading him to meet with a well-renowned psychologist who tells him his own Self Indulgence is what is leading to his mental anguish. The two of them strike up a bet that Earnest can't live for a full year without touching his inherited fortune setting Earnest on a year long quest to work for a living. At under 70 minutes, The Amazing Quest of Earnest Bliss moves at a break-neck pace as Earnest goes from job to job befriending common folk and eventually falling in love. I think the film's short length is a burden of sorts as a lot of these relationships, particularly his big romantic interest, don't feel fleshed out enough, mostly due to the short running time. Cary Grant is charming, as always, but It did feel like he was developing his charismatic style that would become so noticeable in his later films. Although it isn't as well-developed as I would like the films main theme of Love triumphs money is definitely constructed well as Earnest Bliss's love interest is on the verge of marrying for money, unbeknownst to her that the man she truly loves, Earnest, is extremely wealthy. They throw in a nice wrinkle so the viewer doesn't begrudge this woman's presumed greed and in the end the film plays out well, with a nice charming conclusion. While it's not exceptional, it's a nice watch and does have some nice scenes and things of merit. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
