Over one day across the streets of L.A., three lives will change forever. The Ambulance almost immediately exceeds its intended scale, turning what should be a lean and mean retrograde high-concept hostage situation into a sprawling, geographically incomprehensible tour of one of the most gridlocked cities in the United States.

Bay still knows how to shoot movie stars like movie stars... Gyllenhaal looks hot, makes a convincing crook, and is clearly having a great time; in the early, rougher passages, his verve and manic energy almost single-handedly keeps the picture afloat.

I'm not huge on Michael Bay films but I found this one solidly entertaining. The performances were amazing and the visuals were fantastic. My main problem was the cinematography. It had some excellent drone shots, but ultimately the tight close-ups were very shaky and at some points made me nauseous. Movie-goers looking for explosions and destruction are going to love this movie. As a solid thriller/drama, however, this wouldn't be my first choice.

It started off pretty chaotic, especially with the classic Michael Bay camera angles, but once the plot kicked up, it was a giant rush of adrenaline all the way through. The ending is pretty predictable, but it was still a thrill to see it all unfold. Definite 8/10.
