Elliott Stein Film Comment Magazine [Prince] seems to be one unexceptional rapaciously beady-eyed hanger-on. Rated: 1/4 Dec 12, 2017 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times There is a party atmosphere to the telling of these stories, as Mr. Prince holds forth in a smoke-filled room with a group of friends, Mr. Scorsese among them. But the film maker's conviviality takes on an element of regret. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 13, 2007 Full Review Rob Nelson Village Voice It's not just in the hot tub that Scorsese wishes to separate himself from this guy. Sep 13, 2007 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com I won't spoil any of the shock of hearing these tales for the first time, but suffice it to say any of Steven's stories would make great audition monologues for any actor willing to do his or her homework. I love this movie! You just might love it too! Rated: FIVE STARS Dec 27, 2023 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema An evening with an ace storyteller. Yash B I can see why "American Boy" might be interesting to some, it just wasn't really my cup of tea. I thought some of the stories in the movie were kind of cool, but the experience of watching the documentary as a whole was a bit boring. I will say that I have become more interested in watching more of Scorsese's older work by watching his shorts on Criterion, but this one wasn't one of my favorites. Overall, there are moments that are intriguing, but they didn't do much for me personally. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Scorsese is a favorite of mine but this is a snoozer. Steven Prince tells stories that are semi-entertaining but you almost wish it was via a phone call or in person instead of on film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A Completely Wired To-The-Nines Man Is Laughed At (But Not With, Mind You) By His "Friends" As He Recounts His Stupid Life Failures, Many Drug Related. A Train Wreck, It's Sad That Scorsese Utilises This Individuals Disastrous Dilemmas As Entertainment Fodder. An Early Take (40 Years Prior) On Endemol's TV-Shiw : Big Brother. Also Full Of Sad, Soulless, Game Show Drunks. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Fascinating. Some people not only realise how great life is, but also have a fantastic way of relating it. This one, made in 1978, is about Scorsese's friend Steven Prince, who is a great storyteller. I've always been a fan of a good storyteller, and this guy is quite good at weaving his tales of his childhood and his days as a drug addict and working for Neil Diamond, or his tale of giving a woman an adrenaline shot, a tale which inspired Tarantino and "Pulp Fiction". Quite interesting and funny. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
