Jeff M Winkler is known as the nicest guy in show business, so I hate to be Scrooge-like in my review, but this turns out to be just an OK movie. The premise is great – it's not an exact adaptation, but A CHRISTMAS CAROL is actually referenced within the context of the film. My problem is that there's not enough contrast in Winkler's transformation – particularly after his epiphany. He just begins a bit cranky and ends up a little less cranky. There's too much time spent explaining the background of his Benedict Slade, and as a result, the appearances of the ghosts feel like an afterthought. The ghost of Christmas future is especially awkward, with Dorian Harewood appearing almost like a 70s pimp. It was an emotion-less experience even though you can tell Winkler is giving it his all. And, I must say, the old-age make-up is distractingly awful. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Audience Member Set against the bleak backdrop of the Depression, this updated version of Dickens' classic is a must-see, at least once. Henry Winkler delivers a subdued, but intense, performance as the miser in need of redemption. Quality vs quantity in the downfall of the USA's manufacturing economy is powerfully commented upon. Henry Winkler plays a modern day Scrooge named Slade who's just as grouchy, he recieves the three ghost treatment, and it's all done rather well, I was actually quite charmed by the effort. One of the best Carols in my book.
