Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint The script and direction are unabashedly skewed towards feeding a lowest-common-denominator notion of war heroes and takes a righteous stand in favour of war, rather than exploring or portraying an authentic picture of the psychological impact... Aug 5, 2019 Full Review J. Hoberman The New York Review of Books For many, I suspect, American Sniper may be weirdly liberating-gratifying a perhaps hitherto unsuspected desire to see their pessimism, hopeless and unchanging, projected on the screen. Mar 7, 2019 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Well-produced but flawed. Mar 21, 2017 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Eastwood steers clear of politics—it’s not about questioning the mission, it’s about the toll the mission takes on victims and survivors alike. Aug 19, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Eastwood and Hall construct a very cinematic, romantic tale that leaves little to question; though reality, as always, is far more intricate and certainly not as black-and-white. As the saying goes, "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." Jeff C Emotional. (Minus the obvious fake baby blunder), remarkable film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/21 Full Review N I think this was better than a lot of people say. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/17/21 Full Review William I It was fast-moving and was an accurate picture of the circumstances at that time. The actors were excellent! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/21 Full Review Daniel N Everything that Clint Eastwood touches turns to gold. Another brilliant movie by the legend. Really well written and directed. Great story telling and a great mix of action and drama with likeable characters. Bradley Cooper was phenomenal. Another awesome war movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Audience Member A decade old and this is still the highest grossing war film of all time Definitely one of Bradley Cooper’s finest performances by director Clint Eastwood A terrific character study of Chris Kyle, the US Navy seal sniper with 160 confirmed enemy kills He falls in love with a woman Taya and has a child but the PTSD starts affecting him A close examination of heroism on the battlefield and on the home front It also works as a deconstruction of war and how we look at it With Kyle he’s willing to meet his creator soon and answer for every shot he takes defending his country during 4 tours He takes every opportunity to leave his family just to get behind a sniper having a savior complex although unable to save his fellow soldiers A disturbing level of patriotism and sense of duty lingers throughout Nobody every really knows what’s actually going on when all we do is just thank the soldiers for their service The evil gets blurred on several occasions and no one ever walks away with a clear state of mind leaving the battlefield No doubt this created a culture war with Kyle being viewed as jingoistic and immoral But it also showed how post traumatic stress can affect more people so heavily it takes more than one person Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Kauã M An experience that dubiously mixes the weight of seriousness that the plot has and the problems caused by all the surrounding facts, not only the real character but what he and others experience, but manages to deliver weight and captivate you, leaving you uncomfortable or The whole film, in a good way of course, is a good film but the baby doesn't help much.
