Jul 10 Even a decade later this is an insightful, unscripted, and critical analysis of the truthful nature of fame, success, and unexpected downfall Amy Whinehouse had a great voice, talent, and passion for making the kind of music that she never would have guessed made her into a pop sensation The film isn't fabricated one bit as voiceover interviews are interspliced with footage chronicling her life from a broken home to a rising musician The pressure we see too begins to set in with Amy struggling with drugs, alcohol, and being constantly approached by the paparazzi It’s a constant pendulum going from trying to get clean to falling back into the deep hole Amy still wanted to sing and be in love yet everyone to her agent to her father telling her to get help was continuous; you cant force treatment upon someone but only if the person is willing to seek it themselves If she was stronger she probably could have made a bigger comeback and lived to tell about it but director Asif Kapadia does touch upon all her ups and downs that made her who she was even if all of it wasn't grand If things like her father leaving her mother had her dressing promiscuously or her first boyfriend's wrist-cutting made his stepfather leave Amy had a lot to get past from a Jewish upbringing to her untimely death Amy Whinehouse will always be known as someone who could have stayed determined and hopeful but was still loved by many See more Henrique H Mar 6 A touching and authentic story that captivates from beginning to end, leaving no room for boredom. See more Diana P @dianapowers 05/06/2024 This is a very well made documentary. I felt like Amy was troubled long before fame came along and her parents literally ignored her calls for help. She told her mother that she had started a new diet (I.e., bulimia) and her mother did nothing. Bulimia was one of the things that killed her. I think she was always calling for help in the largest way. Perhaps her karmic lesson was that you have to want to save yourself (with the help of trusted professionals). Right now the discourse online I have noticed is that the Amy Winehouse biopic is necessary since this already great documentary exists. I would actually argue that if done tastefully, a biopic could be a very impactful experience and this story definitely has all of the pieces to tell something profound and moving. The way this doc uses archive footage and audio to tell a story is really impressive. I didn't know much about Winehouse before watching this outside of some high-level things, and this movie made me feel like I got to get to know her over the course of it. Overall, it is one of many cautionary tales from this world and a very well-made documentary that is engaging and a memorable experience despite being tough to watch at times.
