Gary B It's tempting to malign "An American Dream" with a bad review, but I found this 1966 dreamy thriller has quite a bit to offer, including a standout acting performance from both Stuart Whitman and his co-star Janet Leigh. I am particularly fond of how Los Angeles was captured, frozen in time in the 60s, as the backdrop for this psychological drama. If you aren't expecting fast action and brilliant dialogue, it's worth your time. And the theme music is a knockout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Tim S What terrible things they did to a very good book. Honestly, the book is one of Mailer's best, challenging, with Mailer's take on sex, violence and power in modern urban America (as of 1965). The movie is mildly steamy, melodramatic (although Eleanor Parker is a hysterical kick), And it just looks cheesy. The supporting parts especially are one dimensional, clichéd, and shrill. Stuart Whitman would seem perfect for the part, except his attempts to portray an internal life merely make him seem befuddled. But it is the cheesiness that is most bothersome. This really is a shame because there is a lot of talent here and Mailer's novel should have provided a basis for a good movie Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/20/20 Full Review Audience Member I agree with the other reviewer. Pretty weak and dull, despite a strong cast. Really surprised it was shown on TCM. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member So-So drama with a good cast but missing a certain tension that would make it compelling. Eleanor Parker is in and out of the picture within fifteen minutes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A disappointing version of Norman Mailer's novel, starring Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh, and Eleanor Parker. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review s r A drama that tries for tragic but falls short. The opening scene does get your attention, but once you lose Eleanor you also lose interest because you don't identify with the odd characters.
