@vision Apr 1 An Inn in Tokyo (Tōkyō no yado) is a 1935 silent film directed by Yasujirō Ozu. The film is Ozu's last extant silent film. The screenplay is credited to Uinzato Mone or Winthat Monnet (Without Money). In fact, the screenplay was written by Ozu, Masao Arata and Tadao Ikeda during a period when Ozu was short on cash. Vision wrote: "the movie hits hard. The father and two sons relationship intertwined with the mother and the daughter is a classic. You might as well say timeless. The backdrop was basic and perfect. The build-up of the story is genuine. Memorable. Touching. Comforting. Moving. The sound was effective and immersive. Takeshi Sakamoto was too convincing. Three and a half fries!" See more 07/21/2016 Imagine ,,The Pursuit Of Happiness" directed by Ozu, what can possibly go wrong? Realism is the key in this picture, great performances and Ozu's masterful direction with his famous trademarks. Ozu describes pre-war Japan's Great Depression with the simplicity, that only he can handle. Great movie 4.5/5 See more 10/22/2010 This Ozu film was better, I think I like his later stuff better than his early stuff. Regardless, the kids are cute, the landscape sad but perfect and the story, while no where overly emotional, it was fitting and well performed. And it had women! Ozu works well with women and here that maybe the improvement. See more 07/23/2010 A poor father is trying to find work and feed his two sons. They wander bleak landscapes, things steadily get worse. There's a lovely scene when the boys and their father imagine having food and mime each longed-for bite. One of Ozu's late silent films. Takeshi Sakamota is superb as the father. Seen July 9, 2010 at the IFC Center, NYC. See more 01/25/2009 Essentially one of the greatest films ever made. A man and his two sons attempts to survive the depression in Japan. This is a wonderfully humane look at suvival in horrendous times. See more 06/02/2008 An offshoot of Ozu's earlier silent crime drama That Night's Wife, in which a man commits a crime to save another's life. Here the film follows an unemployed and homeless man trying to find a job to support his two sons. The characters are significantly more fleshed out, resulting in a much more powerful outcome. Other than the intertitles, most of the narrative and aesthetic conventions of Ozu's later films are existent. See more Read all reviews
