Nobody likes real-estate agent Oren Little (Michael Douglas), and he prefers it that way. He's deliberately mean to anyone who crosses his path and wants nothing more than to sell one final house and retire. Oren's life turns upside-down when his estranged son drops off a granddaughter (Sterling Jerins) he didn't know existed. Oren has no idea how to take care of a child, so he pawns the girl off on his neighbor, Leah (Diane Keaton) -- but he learns how to open his heart eventually.

Critics Consensus

And So It Goes aims for comedy, but with two talented stars stuck in a half-hearted effort from a once-mighty filmmaker, it ends in unintentional tragedy.

Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Douglas and Keaton do just as well with the romantic angle, mostly because he's so adept at dispelling any whiff of mawkishness. Oren's essential orneriness remains, no matter what, and the film turns out to be a lot of fun because of him. [He] seems utterly disengaged as he ploddingly assembles a film whose potential is never realised. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 8, 2014 Full Review Joe McGovern Entertainment Weekly [A] depressingly monotonous Rob Reiner-directed comedy starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton. Rated: C- Jul 25, 2014 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite From the perspective of technical craft, nothing really seems out of place. None of it seems to help the frustratingly uninspired narrative, however, turning “And So It Goes” into a largely inoffensive but depressingly fruitless viewing experience. Cork B I was hoping for a break from the typical Amazon movie garbage, and it is different from that, but not necessarily any better. And so it Goes is an attempt to tell a story about 3 damaged people who come together and make each other better. It has all the elements of a tug on your heart strings feel good rom com, except it feels like a Franken-movie. the parts don't fit quite right and something is off. There are too many convenient sob backstories. Douglas is not horrible, but he doesn't really fit in that cantankerous yet loveable bucket. Keaton was ok, but her singing scenes were painful and thank goodness for fast forward. Not that she is a bad singer, but SO tedious. And they are both too old - I get it, second wind and all, but this looks more like about the 5th wind. Especially Douglas. I think as the movie moves along, it starts to feel less forced, but way too late to save this thing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Audience Member Meh of a movie. Diane Keaton carries it, Michael Douglas ruins it. Cliche storyline. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Steve G They tried to make a cute, funny movie but it seemed contrived and lacked chemistry. The 10 year old girl was good. Almost like two actors, late in their careers, trying to create the same kind of interaction they had when they were younger, but just weren't into it. It did get better near the end, but it wasn't an easy ride. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Avalon T Entertaining and well acted. Although it is predictable it is an enjoyable movie- a good way to soend an evening. Pleasant feel good movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Kate M This is a movie about what happens when life outlives love. It's sweet and simple and sometimes that's just right. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/23 Full Review DJ London A preposterous story told in the broadest strokes. Even the talented stars cannot save it and the whole thing left me wondering how on earth they agreed to appear in it but hey, if it passed my time I guess it did the same for them...
