An anonymous sperm donor made Julie Davidson (Vanessa Williams) a single mom six years ago. Now her son, Jake (Jeremy Gumbs), is having trouble in school. Fearing the cause is genetic, Julie tracks down the birth father, Paul Cooper (Kevin Daniels), an aspiring actor. Julie isn't pleased that half of her son's genes come from an underachiever. But Jake and Paul hit it off and Julie starts to feel close to Paul herself. Complicating matters is her marriage-minded boyfriend, Ted (Michael Boatman).
