Birithivy Y Andha Naal - 10/10. Sivajiganesan is one of the greatest actors that has come from tamil cinema and indian cinema. His filmography is filled with memorable movies and performances. Though Andha Naal is a film that isn't usually ranked high on his most memorable films, I would go on the limb by saying its probably his best movie and performance. Even though its not necessarily a performance that fills up the film (surprisingly, Sivaji only really appears often on screen after the intermission), it's definitely one of his most layered and realistic performances he had ever done. Andha Naal, which came out in the 50s, is such an amazing and entertaining murder mystery film. It's so good, its probably a lot better than some of the more recent year murder mystery films that have come out in tamil cinema. The film was a commercial failure when it first released, probably in part because of it being marketed with Sivaji in the lead, though he only really becomes the lead in the second half. But it has attained a lot of success over the decades, with huge directors like Ameer and Mani Ratnam citing it as inspirational towards their way of making films. The movie is really different from other movies of its era: no songs, the lead character is quite morally shaded, the film follows an ensemble of characters, and it is a lot more subtlety acted and filmed. S. Balachander was a director that really followed suit with the hollywood filming techniques and story creation. This film really made use of shadows and characters who are well etched. It's probably the earliest example of film noir in tamil, and is a prime example of how to make a film in that genre. It does borrow heavily from Agatha Christie's story telling techniques and really follows a more western type of structure, but it is that reason why I believe the film is so beloved and regarded today. Many films nowadays go for shock and twists, forgetting that the performances and atmosphere are what help create a good film. The last half hour of the film shows how amazing Sivaji is, as he turns himself into quite a scary and conniving villain. Its a classic that you must see!
