Jeff Shannon Seattle Times "Andr Gregory: Before and After Dinner," is an insightful documentary/love letter directed by Gregory's second wife, Cindy Kleine, who married Gregory when she was 39 and he was 63. Rated: 3/4 Aug 8, 2013 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe The film sees the creative process as a sacrament in which the play's not the thing but the getting there is. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 1, 2013 Full Review Donald Liebenson RogerEbert.com "Before and After Dinner" is not fully satisfying, but it does offer a rich portrait of the artist as an ever-seeking explorer. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 3, 2013 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Unfortunately, those unfamiliar with Gregory and his work will most likely find Kleine's documentary aggravating and without any type of thrust beyond a compilation of shared familial memories. Aug 9, 2019 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews The witty and hilarious biopic looks back with fondness on how Gregory became an American icon in the theater and even found relative success in Hollywood. Rated: A- Dec 23, 2013 Full Review Chris Knight National Post If you've long yearned to know more about the guy in My Dinner with Andre (or Demolition Man if you prefer), here's your chance. Audience Member André Gregory is a fascinating man, but you'd never know it from this documentary. Perhaps if his wife, who made this film, didn't feel the need to interject herself as a character of equal importance as her husband this might have worked. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting but ultimately self-indulgent film by Cindy Kleine. Certainly, the art of and the artist, Andre Gregory, is deserving of a documentary. He has trained some of the most important talent of the last 40 years and is an eccentrically interesting person. The problem is that the film is directed by his wife who seems to want to make the film as much about herself as about him. There are also themes of of "latent homosexuality" and "false memory" that run throughout the film that are never fully expressed or explored. These themes come up either as questions or accidentally. The film works best when Kleine drops her narration and simply films Gregory interacting with others -- especially his long-time friend and co-collaborator, Wallace Shawn. Worth a look if you have an interest in the art of acting or the slowly vanishing concept of a stage artist. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting, if poorly controlled (like a student driver who wanders about the road having not yet mastered the skill of keeping an automobile on track) , when Mr. Gregory talks about theater and acting. Not so interesting when Ms. Klein veers to impose herself into the movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
