Fans will appreciate the elegy, but the film doesn't have as much crossover potential as it might have. Go to Full Review

Awe-inspiring and emotional, "Andy Irons: Kissed by God" ably strikes a balance between a standard sports doc and a biography of a man whose internal battles were as challenging as his competition. Go to Full Review

Kissed by God has echoes of Amy as it chronicles the scope of Andy's career as a surfer to give audiences the full shaker of the cocktail that killed him. Go to Full Review

Tongue L Feb 11 One of the best documentaries I have ever watched. With all the struggles Andy had, he was able to accomplish more in his short lifetime than most people do in their entire lifetimes. I liked how his brother narrated the story. Bruce did not sugar coat anything, so it felt like you really got to know the real Andy. A reminder that we are all human, and we all have flaws. Andy was an incredible surfer, and should be remembered for his gifted talents & accomplishments. See more 11/11/2021 I have to say, and I know many loved Irons for his surfing, that much of this film actually turned out kind of trite. From the Irons loved ones still obsessed with somehow blaming Kelly Slater for causing Irons to "break," to letting many of the enablers clearly off the hook, this film dodges much of the central issues. While it did point out the inexcusable and baffling aggro nature of Andy Irons, it did not go far enough. And the all consuming obsession with Slater was nearly as disruptive to his life as were the substances. This obsession was only enabled even more by many of the people interviewed in this film long after his death. This film also avoids the very real and cynical reality that Irons' family did everything they could to dodge the real cause of death determined by the medical examiner from being released by perpetuating a blatant lie concocted by the family that he died of dengue fever. The reality is his substance addictions did him in (even in death his loved ones were enabling him for their own ego one can only assume, though it's really not clear). Mental illness played a role, obviously. But his "wolf pack" buddies certainly didn't do anything to help him and they were obvious leaches waiting for the next bone thrown from the table of Irons and they weren't about to tell Irons that he was doing anything wrong. It's sad all around but ultimately this film only contributes to the surf culture's inability to deal with reality much of the time. It's a paradox for the surfing world: They want as much attention and coverage as any other sport. But as soon as they get it they close ranks and claim they're too precious for such unfair coverage. This film is an exclamation point behind that adage. See more Michele B 02/07/2021 Such a tragic yet beautiful story of a very polarizing individual. Gorgeous settings and exciting competition footage. Beautiful to watch. See more 01/04/2021 Not really a film but more of a documentary See more 12/05/2020 This was one of the most inspirational and beautiful films you will ever see. I grew up surfing and watching Andy and to get a glimpse into his life was amazing. I laughed, I cried, I cried more, but it really touched my soul. So much so I commissioned a massive painting of Andy up on my wall now. WATCH THIS See more 06/04/2020 An amazing story of a talented surfer and his struggle with a mental health issue. The last twenty minutes of the movie created a flood of emotions that took my breathe away and caused me to tear up. I have never reacted this way to any movie and I had a personal connection with the movie because of my life experiences. During my generation you were pushed under the rug or indirectly punished for having a mental health issue. See more Read all reviews
