What to Know

Critics Consensus

Returning Daniel Day-Lewis to the screen with all his ferocious talent intact, Anemone succeeds more as a showcase for its star's evergreen magnetism and debut director Ronan Day-Lewis' stylistic flair than as a cohesive drama.

Wendy Ide Observer (UK) An undisciplined, incoherent slog that is overloaded with empty symbolism and showy thesping. It manages to make one of the finest actors of his generation look like an undignified ham and to squander the talents of the always impressive Samantha Morton. Nov 10, 2025 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies After a strong opening drag, there’s the feeling that the film doesn’t really have anything more to say, its revelations seeming fairly paltry in the scheme of things. Rated: 2/5 Nov 8, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It's a very powerful piece. Nov 7, 2025 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal Less about the sins of the father than the sins of the father-son screenwriting exercise. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 26, 2025 Full Review Jeffrey Overstreet Looking Closer This has the resonance of a deeply personal work. It’s a testimony in textures of what it feels like to venture willingly into someone else’s trauma, resentment, grief, and shame, and to just be with them there, in that trouble. Rated: B+ Nov 24, 2025 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Cinencuentro The acting is sublime, from Day-Lewis to Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. But overall, the film is completely conventional and predictable, telling us little about trauma, parent-child relationships, and guilt. [Full review in Spanish]. Destry C I never thought I would ever see the day when I would write that a Daniel Day-Lewis movie was just about the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. Aside from his as usual superb acting, and the strong performance of Sean Bean, this movie was like staring at a deep hole filled with smelly, stagnant bilge water. The direction, writing (although Daniel Day-Lewis co-wrote), and film school symbols at an attempt for relevancy and depth, i.e. that hideous luminous dinosaur-like creature, and the oversized fish, had amateur-Nepo-baby-I only got this directorial gig because of who my dad is exposure written all over it. The senior Day-Lewis' other voyage into nepotism was the almost equally rotten outing of his wife, The Ballad of Jack and Rose. This latest movie was so bad, it was physically repulsive. Although some of the visuals showed artistic promise, when you go to a movie with someone who has the acting caliber of Day-Lewis and Bean, you somehow expect to experience something that goes beyond just being promising. Truthfully, it even failed to achieve that. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review Mr. Hollywood What a bore. Artsy fartsy. Shots of the landscape were nice and all but come on. It was downright boring. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/25 Full Review Michael G kind of shallow and a little scattered... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review Phil It was a solid character piece but 5 star b/c DDL still got his fastball and I need this man to keep acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Kurt B I have never seen a movie this bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/25 Full Review Pat N So great to see Daniel Day Lewis. Hes worth the ticket alone to watch. Sean Bean and Samantha Morton are always good to see. The cinematography is beautiful. Meditation on fatherhood and brotherhood tied kinda vaguely into the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
