Paul Klee, a Swiss-German painter, fled Germany in 1933 when he and other modern artists were vilified by the rising Nazi Party. Isolated in Switzerland, a mysterious disease began wreaking havoc on his body and profoundly changing his artwork. Narrator/director, Ken August Meyer, explores Klee's expressive last works after being diagnosed with the same life-threatening disease, systemic scleroderma. Through a curation of Klee's work, Ken finds powerful messages on coping with his own mortality. Using colorful and whimsical visuals, Angel Applicant echoes the mystique and ironic wit of Klee, demonstrating how creativity can inspire us to overcome personal suffering and make the most of life.

Mar 20, 2023 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots This touching, heartfelt, first-person documentary about the power of art and its ability to speak to people on a very deep level is a beautiful piece of cinema. May 22, 2023 Full Review Courtney Small POV Magazine In highlighting the power of art by connecting Klee’s works with Meyer’s personal growth, Angel Applicant finds strength in a medium that thrives on being open to interpretation. May 6, 2023 Full Review Angelo Muredda Film Freak Central Meyer's blend of disability memoir and amateur art history is poignant stuff, a melancholy effort to forge a kinship bond with an irretrievably lost artist who can communicate with him at a distance through the abstractions of his art. Rated: 3/4 May 6, 2023 Full Review Martin Kudlac ScreenAnarchy A bumpy emptional rollercoaster that will nudge viewers to question themselves: how would they respond to a similar turn of fate? May 3, 2023 Full Review John Fink The Film Stage Telling the story of his own affliction, Angel Applicant is a captivating self-portrait that––like the work of graphic-designer-turned-filmmaker Mike Mills––uses everyday objects and works of art to make sense of one’s own life.
