Geoff Andrew Time Out One of the most astonishing film debuts ever, made while France was still under Nazi occupation. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader the heaviness of the dialogue is balanced by Jany Holt's superbly understated performance as the prisoner -- a performance that looks forward to the invisible acting style of Bresson's mature work. Mar 4, 2006 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia A debut feature that subtly announces certain qualities of Bressonian aesthetics to question the emancipation and female suffering. Audience Member The director of this film is Robert Bresson and not August Rieger. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a well-made picture, but that it is Bresson's debut is frustrating, because it is not one as memorable or distinctive as his later work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member A great debut though certainly not as masterful as his later work. There is a lot of power and brilliance here but it's also unevenly paced and not as rigorous as his best work. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Rating: 3.3/5. This being Bresson's first film, it is also a conventional film. It is well acted for that time. Even though it is predictable, I liked the story. But, it is a boring film full of flat characters. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Bresson's first feature contains several passages of his unique, visually-oriented poetry, particularly in his attempts to show identification between the two leads. The redemptive narrative arc fits in well with Bresson's early career, even if he relies on dialogue more here than he does once his style matures. The depth, fluidity, and mise-en-scene of the final sequence surprises in its impact, which is considerable, a result of a masterful talent honing his craft. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Bresson's first feature film, and all about nuns, so I figured it wouldn't hold my interest. But it turned out to be quite a compelling story that covers a lot of ground. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
