Jonathan Curiel San Francisco Chronicle Schaedler's film raises as many questions as he answers. Rated: 3/4 Jan 5, 2009 Full Review Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader This scholarly 2005 tribute to activist Gendun Choephel (1903-'51) stands out among movies about the Sino-Tibetan conflict because Swiss filmmaker Luc Shaedler, like his subject, aims to demythologize Tibet. Apr 20, 2007 Full Review Bill Stamets Chicago Sun-Times This incisive film -- which opens with rare footage of angry monks throwing stones at Chinese troops -- nicely resists and complicates simpler views of the storied land. Rated: 3/4 Apr 20, 2007 Full Review Louis Proyect rec.arts.movies.reviews A view of Tibet that differs from Richard Gere's deification of the Dalai Lama and "Lost Horizon". Highly recommended portrait of Buddhist monk who evolved into a revolutionary. Feb 28, 2007 Full Review Audrey Rock-Richardson Tooele Transcript-Bulletin (Utah) Schaedler allows us almost no real understanding of Choepel. Rated: C Jan 24, 2006 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member oh my, this monk! what can we say about this monk? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this last year just before going to Tibet and it gave me another perspective of that land. I thoroughly recommend it to people that are interested in seeing Tibet as much more than a mystical Shangri-La. Also worth reading is Trespassers on the Roof of the World: The Secret Exploration of Tibet from Peter Hopkirk Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this a few years ago at Sundance and quite enjoyed it. It was thought provoking and interesting. Well worth checking out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked the footage. The monk story itself was so-so. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Great documentary on Gendun Choephel. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
