Critics Consensus

Anna and the Apocalypse finds fresh brains and a lot of heart in the crowded zombie genre - not to mention a fun genre mashup populated by rootable characters.

The one bright spot is the spirited cast, whose genuine good cheer ameliorates the obnoxious self-reflexivity of the writing and direction. Go to Full Review

Anna and her friends come to understand the most frightening aspect of adulthood, realizing that friends and parents won't always be there to help you, and that the biggest fear is having to stand on your own two feet. Go to Full Review

If you're looking for polish or sophistication from "Anna And The Apocalypse," you're chomping on the wrong neck. But the songs are bouncy, the performances fresh and the gore happily not in any way related to real life. You got to love that. Go to Full Review

This film is touted as “Shaun of the Dead meets La La Land”, but it’s really Shaun of the Dead meets high school musical, except not as funny and with less memorable songs. Go to Full Review

John McPhail tackles the genre hybrid trend with Anna and the Apocalypse, a zombie horror film which is also a musical comedy with a Christmasy vibe. Go to Full Review

... The movie sometimes falters as a result of its own ambition. Fortunately, you'll be too distracted by fun set pieces and the cast's fully committed performances to care that much. Go to Full Review

Horror N @HorrorNerdUK 11h So many people are taking this one way too seriously. It is a Christmas musical with Zombies. It's not supposed to be a serious horror movie or a serious musical. This film is exactly what it promises to be, a campy, cheesy, Christmas time piece of dumb fun. It has a great mix of zombie horror, comedy and teenage angst. It's made it's way onto my annual Christmas watch list and I genuinely think it's such a fun movie that I'd recommend highly at Christmas time. Yeah it's more Highschool musical meets Shaun of the Dead than La La Land since La La Land is a far more high budget serious musical. This is not that kind of music, turn your brain off and just enjoy it. See more Mark B 4d I found myself bored. Songs are catchy but the " joke" of if high school musical was a zombie movie wears thin. See more Louis L Nov 20 This movie deserves so much more love. The songs are so catchy, the actors are great. It's so much fun, it's like high school musical, night of the living dead and a sweet Christmas movie all rolled into one. See more Kim P Jul 12 If you thought Cop Rock was one of the worst television shows of all time, you're REALLY gonna hate this movie! A Christmas movie about self-absorbed high school kids, breaking into song and dancing their way through battling zombies? Well, I still thought it was WAY better and more realistic than Glee and on that TV show. they were actually supposed to sing! The catchy tunes, great harmonies, and elaborate dance moves elevated this movie to a guilty pleasure for me. Sorry, not sorry. Therefore, I had great expectations regarding “Anna and the Apocalypse” based on its rating. Unfortunately, director John McPhail made an unbearable movie with the combination of musical and horror. But nothing comparable to the cult “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975). “Anna and the Apocalypse” (2017) is annoying since the very beginning, with a poor story and awful songs. Despite the good teen cast, this film is intolerable. My vote is two.
