My rating may be biased though because i love dancing and musical movies in general Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/25 Full Review TheMovieSearch R Another Cinderella Story (2008) takes the beloved fairytale into a new generation, this time through the lens of music and dance — and while it doesn’t quite reach the charm or magic of Hilary Duff’s A Cinderella Story, it still offers a fun, lighthearted take on the classic tale. Starring Selena Gomez as Mary Santiago and Drew Seeley as Joey Parker, the film modernizes the Cinderella story with a pop-infused twist. Mary is an aspiring dancer living under the control of her self-absorbed guardian, Dominique (played hilariously by Jane Lynch), who treats her like an assistant rather than family. When a masked dance competition brings Mary and Joey together, sparks fly — both on the dance floor and off. Selena Gomez, still in her early Disney Channel years, carries the film with charm and sincerity. She brings an understated sweetness to Mary, balancing vulnerability with quiet determination. While the script doesn’t always give her much emotional depth to work with, Gomez’s natural charisma and relatability make her an engaging lead. Drew Seeley, who many will remember for his singing work on High School Musical, delivers a solid performance as Joey Parker, the superstar dancer returning to school life. His chemistry with Gomez is sweet and believable, and their dance sequences together are the highlights of the film. The choreography is vibrant, energetic, and easily the movie’s strongest element. Jane Lynch, as always, is a standout. Her comedic timing and exaggerated diva energy as Dominique provide much-needed humor, often stealing scenes with her sharp wit and ridiculous self-obsession. The supporting cast, while uneven, helps keep the film light and entertaining. Where Another Cinderella Story struggles is in its writing and pacing. The story can feel predictable and formulaic at times, with certain moments playing out exactly as you’d expect. Still, its energy, catchy soundtrack, and commitment to fun make it an easy, feel-good watch — especially for younger audiences. In the end, Another Cinderella Story may not redefine the franchise, but it delivers on its promise: a playful, music-filled fairytale for the dance and pop-loving generation. Selena Gomez’s natural screen presence and the film’s upbeat tone make it a charming entry in the Cinderella Story lineage — not perfect, but undeniably enjoyable.
