Critics Consensus

Due to its use of cliched and ludicrous plot devices, this thriller is more predictable than suspenseful. Also, the acting is bad.

Jeff Strickler Minneapolis Star Tribune Got a by-the-numbers plot? A premise that's intriguing but also has holes in it? Dialogue that needs punching up? Hire Tim Robbins. Jeff D This is a 2001 film coming off the 90s when dial up internet was subscribed through free AOL and Compuserve CDs at local grocery stores. Movies like this stretched the imagination of what was possible with this internet thing. Can you write a code to take over all televisions on that planet? Maybe. This was a great movie for its time, similar to Hackers (1995). A group of computer nerds team up to battle corporate greed. The antagonist is also a computer nerd but is outsmarted by younger talent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review donnie m started watching until MAIN character started stuffing food in his mouth and talking-SO gross Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review alan g Ryan phillipe as a computer hacker. Only if you suspend belief. Wooden acting. Posing and petulence. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Test T I watched this for the first time on dvd, over 20 years after it was released. It get's poor reviews, but the story interested me. First off, nothing ages quicker than tech, so everything that was new and cool in 2001 is now either in landfill or a museum. That said, old tech was slow, and that gives the writers scope to create dramatic tension, while waiting for a cd to burn, or for a network connection to come up. The story is based around the good open source coders vs the evil corporate empires trying to profit from their work. Thing's get pretty ugly in this film, but the underlying struggle should ring true with anyone who ever worked in tech. I was a coder during the wild west days of IT, and the film just exaggerates how I remember it being. In summary, I found the film very watchable, and I think as a thriller it hits the mark. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/23 Full Review online s folks! how can download this movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review Kyle J The second half was excellent. I was on the verge of fast-forwarding. So glad I didn't. DONT READ TILL AFTER WATCHING: I would have given a higher rating if the makers had not insisted on salvaging a love interest.
