What to Know

Critics Consensus

The additional footage slows down the movie somewhat (some say the new cut is inferior to the original), but Apocalypse Now Redux is still a great piece of cinema.

Amy Taubin Village Voice Apocalypse has the expressive extravagance of a Wagner opera-and not merely because the swooping helicopter scene is set to the "Ride of the Valkyries." Sep 22, 2024 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out It's wonderful to see this hallucinatory folly-cum-near masterpiece again on the big screen. Sep 22, 2024 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times Coppola's sprawling, harrowing war story is not to be missed. Sep 22, 2024 Full Review Urban Cinefile Critics Urban Cinefile This is still magnificent filmmaking and story-telling on every level. Apocalypse Now is one of the great films because it is about every war ever fought and at the same time is about much more than men in combat. Sep 22, 2024 Full Review Adrian Turner Radio Times Whether the additional scenes greatly enhance an already exhilirating experience is debatable, but they are certainly worth the wait. Audience Member Boring. Dont get the hype Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Somak B It is a truly remarkable piece of art, unlike anything ever created before. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review geng qi z the masterpiece.legend Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Colin A A nightmare within a dream. This film is an incredible experience and one of the most ambitious projects ever filmed, risking life and sanity to create something beyond scope and compare. A masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Cork B Did I ENJOY this? I am not sure if I could say that. It is very dark, overly long, and really weird. An officer is tasked with going up a river on a gunboat and taking out a colonel that has gone rogue. Along the river, he has many strange encounters that seem to indicate that war is chaos, and everyone is in on it (Lord of the Flies for adults?) There is a solid cast and excellent cinematography. The movie has some very iconic scenes. That all said, 'redux' was WAY too long, and the weird non-sequiturs were a bit too much - we are not really supposed to be watching Monty Python. But I think the idea is this is less about the Vietnam war (we don't even get a Vietnamese perspective here) and more about how maybe we think we are better than the people we are trying to 'save', but that the reality on the ground is quite different. And that reality basically causes everyone in the movie to go insane. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Aidan B It definitely isn't for everyone, and the film does feel longer than the theatrical cut does. However, I still thoroughly enjoyed "Apocalypse Now Redux" and thought it was just as much an iconic masterpiece as the original version was.
