Alec B The plot is disappointingly predictable, relying a lot more on Hollywood clichés than you'd expect. However, the film presents some of the most workable and stunning Steampunk imagery you're likely to find. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review Gbor G The world building in this movie is a joy to watch, but it's pulled down by its dull and unoriginal good-vs-evil theme and lack of character depth. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review pigeonheart u i saw this movie as a kid and fell in love. it's not groundbreaking, but the art is beautiful and the story interesting enough that it keeps you entertained. i think it's just so charming with its awkward protagonists and grey landscapes that you ultimately kind of like it, cause it's really one of a kind. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Existential and weird and then enormously compelling; superb voice performances Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Of its kind, this is almost perfect. Beautifully drawn (sometimes reminiscent of Hergé's Tintin), an engaging story, interesting and varied characters .. and a talking cat. Excellent. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Technology takes a different path and is the main cause for a different world history in APRIL AND THE EXTRAORDINARY WORLD. One family designs a serum of interest to the powers that be. One conceit of this animation is that anyone needs the special serum to enhance themselves, since everyone is already pretty robust and can survive great calamity, such as dropping into a pile of coal on their heads. For awhile, I speculated the family had already taken the serum without us seeing it. Overall, the animation is great with its own style. There are a wide range of settings, which are well designed and executed. Color pallet complements the scenery and story. And the story has interesting and imaginative developments, and twists and turns. Mostly this is from the perspective of one family, and any movie could be limited by budget, but the film could've explored world leadership further for a more enriched world. Roxana Hadadi Punch Drunk Critics As much as April and the Extraordinary World veers around a little too often and gets too self-indulgent with its exposition, the film effectively builds a whole other steampunk-inspired world in which viewers can get lost, gas masks and all. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Dmitry Samarov Chicago Reader Should appeal to precocious children... Adults may find it as derivative and simplistic as the steampunk aesthetic to which it's indebted, but for a gateway to more resonant cinema and literature, you could do worse. May 5, 2016 Full Review Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer April and the Extraordinary World will have your imagination doing somersaults and cartwheels.
