Empire Magazine Rated: 3/5 Aug 5, 2005 Full Review Edward Crouse Village Voice Uncritical as the movie is, it's a pity no one's hip to the possibility that he's endlessly repeating his greatest work of the 1980s. Jan 25, 2005 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post It would have helped if Araki's critics had more of a say. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 21, 2005 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Klose brilliantly captures Araki's spirit, both through his personality and his work. Audience Member DOPE ASS WORK TRAVIS!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting look at a legendary photographer. There's 57 minutes of him chatting in the extras if you really want more, but the film displays his background well. He played in a cemetery next to the red light district, where there was a mass grave for prostitutes. He has a mother fixation and his wife died. It would have been nice to see a little bit more about him growing up in 1940's Japan in the heat exposure segment. An energetic and focused individual, kudos. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Nobuyoshi Araki is a robust man, a talent; he's the gynecologist of Japanese photography, living the dream according to the fantasies of many men, with his speciality occupation of capturing female erotica. His specialties include: bondage, and anything else related into turning flesh into a bouquet, trinket or object of diminutive glossy magazine soft core. His madness is calculated, his kinetic zest for playful role play--inspiring. He's carved a niche in the world of kink, and expanded the taboo to far beyond the definition of its yesteryear. This documentary is great if you like photography and/or like to look at varieties of naked Japanese women. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member amusing little doc about a funny little man who takes A LOT of photos which just happen to be pretty terrific. some interesting commentary from takeshi kitano and richard kern, some meaningless prattle from björk, and lots of face time with the constantly excited man of the hour, nobuyoshi araki. though, if you can't deal with photos of women in bondage you may as well not watch this. this guy shoots as much porn as he does art and more often than not the line between the two is very blurry. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member (***): Fascinating documentary that surely deserves a NC-17 for its showing of many of the artist/photographer's photos. I never heard about him before but his art is surely unique and I liked this portrait of him. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Since touring his photo exhibition for the first time over 15 years ago, i have been taking this guy as a crazy, bizarre and erotic genius. This docu has largely adjusted my perception. Araki Hirohiko is a interesting, childish contemporary photographer with power of imgination. His obsession with women, as far as i see, is all about respect, fun, love and liberation. He developed such an obsession since childhood. He started relating women to death and sex, having witnessed many dead, lone prositutes dumped to an abandoned graveyard without leaving a mark. I really like his friendly idea of picturing porn housewives and the fact that so many housewives are coming over his studio for "help" to make their wish come true. Watch it but watch this colourful biography of Araki with a sense of humor, and ease. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
