But the singular aesthetic is gritty, beautiful and expressive, and somehow, you want to root for the love story of Eli and Anya, thanks to the charismatic performances of [Michael Patrick] Nicholson and [Chelsea] Lopez. Go to Full Review

"Are We Not Cats" is a well-put-together film with a lot of striking imagery, but, as you may have already inferred, something of a specialty item. Go to Full Review

Lopez and Nicholson also appeared in Robin's short film of the same name, on which this longer version is based, and the roles hang on them comfortably, even at their most grotesque. Go to Full Review

It's DP Matt Clegg who transforms Are We Not Cats into something so wonderfully weird on a visual level, that you can't help but become smitten by Eli and Anya's blossoming, albeit highly unconventional, relationship. Go to Full Review

Edgy yet elliptical, the film manages to be both creepy and charming, even though the characters aren't conventionally sympathetic. Like the film, the committed performances feel raw and authentic. Go to Full Review

Solidly directed by Xander Robin, Are We Not Cats is sly and sunless...As a piece of storytelling, it's a miscarriage with several unexplainable gaps, but in a visceral level, it has its impactful moments. Go to Full Review

Diana S 07/19/2024 Weird and gross, but better than the usual weird and gross indie. See more the s 11/08/2020 Was really surprised at how much I liked this movie. It wasn't an amazing work of cinema or anything but the truth is that it is way better than most movies being made these days. Acting, storyline, filming, etc were solid. Reminded of me of the 90s era of indie films where they had something to say and when making a film meant more than just having a rich dad to pay for your $20,000 camera without any goal except to become famous. It's good. Interesting. Different. And like I said, right now that's enough for me to make me really enjoy it. See more 10/29/2020 Love the title. It makes sense on many levels! See more 08/22/2020 A truly unique love story See more @c0urtn3y 01/20/2020 wtf. to be honest, the ending/main idea of the movie is really quite disturbing, but it takes SO long to get there. the vast majority of the movie from start to *almost* finish is really slow & really boring. i thought about shutting it off more than once, but because of the rather good reviews i figured it must be worth it. to be clear i don't think it's worth it. but the end is definitely what makes the movie appealing. or... unappealing, rather. See more 12/05/2018 I loved this movie. It was so stunning and the gore is terrific, especially for an indie film. It's a must see. See more Read all reviews
