Raven Snook Time Out While the film's real-life twists and turns are difficult to follow, the human desperation it depicts is all too easy to grasp. Nov 23, 2015 Full Review Wesley Morris Boston Globe The movie is rich with powerful supporting imagery, cogent conspiratorial information, and damning C-Span congressional footage. Nov 23, 2015 Full Review Robert Koehler Variety A vital if less than objective slice of film journalism on the U.S.'s troubled history in the Third World. Jul 7, 2010 Full Review Chadwick Jenkins PopMatters The fascinating thing about this particular documentary is that, despite its ostensible subject (the eponymous deposed president), the film engages the more important and pressing issues that underlie Aristide's presidency and his removal. Rated: 6/10 Nov 23, 2015 Full Review Jeff Meyers Metro Times (Detroit, MI) As a window into our country's right-wing attitudes about emerging democracies, the film is particularly timely. Nov 23, 2015 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International Makes a strong statement and brings to light important reportage with a straightforward yet persuasive style. Audience Member This movie is a great introduction to the issues currently plaguing Haiti. I liked that people of all opinions are included...very informative. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I was really affected by the film -Haiti: Killing the Dream-, but that one is out-of-date and very hard to find. This is a very nice replacement for that old classic. I think I found this one a little boring at times because I knew so much of the story already, but if you want to learn about the US's most recent intervention in Haiti, this film is where it's at. Features extensive interviews with Paul Farmer, Noam Chomsky, and many others... even Aristide himself. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent, and infuriating. It's interesting that there's a review that says this movie is balanced because I think the anti-Aristide people look like fools. And Aristide is so cute....his eyes....oh it's like Thom Yorke from Radiohead. "Philippe is more American than Aristide, baby / Despite the fact that Aristide was elected / Philippe recognizes the voice of power and he respects it" - Son of Nun Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is a great introduction to the issues currently plaguing Haiti. I liked that people of all opinions are included...very informative. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Doesn't make me proud to be an American after watching this film. It's disturbing how the American Gov't can meddle. Bush is so adamant to bring democracy to Iraq, yet doesn't want it in Haiti. Quite the contradiction. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A critical look at the role international denial of foreign aid has on Haiti, and in particular former president Aristide. The most recent denial of foreign aid (over 3 consecutive years) builds on over 200 years of embargos and financial manipulation by external forces, since Haiti fought to become the first free country in 1804, challenging the hypocrisy present in the Enlightenment which called for freedom for the bourgeoisie in France, but kept quiet on slavery in the colonies. A must see movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
