Insurance adjuster Lorimer Black (James Frain) thinks he's got life all figured out -- until he goes to meet a client and discovers that he's committed suicide. His life spirals downward from there as he starts investigating a hotel fire that gets him caught in the middle of an insurance scam, which he believes his company is involved in. Through the investigation, he continues to deal with everyday annoyances, all the while attempting to seduce a married woman (Catherine McCormack).
