Sam C Conflicting feelings on this film. It is not Stallone's best work. His character was reserved, but in a way that lacked nuance. He has played reserved characters (Rambo) before, but this time it made the character difficult to get empathise with. Banderas was excellent, stealing every scene he was featured in. The story was underwhelming, though it was well directed and edited. If you're a big Stallone or Banderas fan, this is worth a watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Dave D I suggested this to cinephile because they asked for cheesy films that are watchable. That's what it is. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Daniel M I remember really liking this movie when I was young, but watching it recently just bored me half way. It was great seeing Stallone and Banderas in their prime though Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/23 Full Review William D One of my favorite movies I have seen. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Laura L It's an awesome action movie with retiring agents and a surprising end. The setting is great for the story and both Banderas and Stalone entered the skin of the characters. Banderas had a difficult role and he was fantastic! And by Stalone, I particularly liked the scene in which he discovers that Nicolai - an agent he thought he killed 15 years before and felt guilty for - was, actually, very much alive. This scene felt so, so real. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review Joseph B I first watched Assassins for the first time in 1998 on sky movies and absolutely enjoyed it unfortunately I missed out on taping on my VHS but due to the movies showing on repeat I recorded it on my 2nd viewing. About the film, made by the late great Richard Donner who brought fantastic movies like the Lethal Weapon series, Superman The Movie, Superman 2 Donner Cut. You know with Donner you are going to get character development, story and action. So here you have an old lion meets young lion scenario in Stallone who's role as an about to be retired number 1 assassin and goes head to head with rising star Banderas (doing a complete 180 from his hero leading man in Desperado) as the bad guy and aspiring young gun trying to replace Stallone's character by any means as the number 1 hired gun in the world. Not trying to take away from Stallone who plays off as pretty quiet than most of his roles at the time but Banderas absolutely steals the movie and whenever he is not on screen you cant wait for him to show up again because he is absolutely entertaining and fun to watch. This movie is an absolute belter from start to finish. I even have it on DVD now and if I dont see a rerun of it on television or sky then I always grab it off the shelf and stick the disc in and press play. Awesome film. Ian Nathan Empire Magazine The action is stilted and infrequent, reduced to indifferent gun play, car chases and one standout explosion when a gas main ignites. Rated: 2/5 Mar 2, 2012 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly There's so much dead air floating around in this icy-cool thriller that the director, Richard Donner, seems to be trying for an art-house version of his Lethal Weapon series (The 400 Blows to Your Head?).
