Audience Member Based on the Belgium comic book series Asterix This entry is the fourth adaptation of the adventures of Asterix and his buddy Obelix Caesar, the Emperor of Rome has conquered everything but the village of Gaul The villagers oppose the Romans Obelisk has fallen in love with Panacea but she is swept by a younger, more handsome man Tragicomix who seeks her hand in marriage But Caesar has ordered a big competition to be held in the coliseum and both Panacea and Tragicomix get captured forced into the games It's up to Asterix and Obelisk to save them by storming the garrison This thing is enormously short but it's chock full of decent animation, some hilarious slapstick, and funny dubbing Harmless wackiness for the kids Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Between 2.5 and 3 stars. Although it contains only a very partial glimpse from the original comic (I mean "Asterix légionnaire", from which most of the story comes), that is enough to get a few laughs. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Were it not for the mediocre voice acting (it should be noted that this movie and Asterix in Britain were produced by the same studio, explaining why Asterix and Obelix's accents seem unsure whether they're American or French, due to having the same voice actors), some occasionally crap editing and the "What did he say?" joke from Asterix the Legionary really not working well in the English dub (maybe the French writers did a better job translating this joke to this new context, IDK), Asterix Versus Caesar would be perfect. There's still a lot of good stuff, though. The animation looks like it came straight out of a Disney movie, the jokes are funny, the story is decent - it helps that it is based off of two Asterix stories, Asterix the Legionary and Asterix the Gladiator, meaning it's less of a shot-for-shot remake than other adaptations occasionally feel...not to mention the source stories being thematically similar enough to mesh pretty well - and the movie has surprisingly serious moments. There's one of the few times Asterix's life is placed in genuine peril, how grim prison is with an beautiful yet eerie sounding...song(?) and even attempted rape. I am not making this up, there is a failed sexual assault in a movie targeted towards kids. Remember when moral guardians weren't a thing? The darker tone makes this movie feel like what would happen if you had Don Bluth in his glory days direct an Asterix film. And how can I forget that catchy song "Asterix est la"?. Once again, being produced by the same company explains why that song and Lookout is Out from Britain sound similar. Asterix Versus Caesar isn't perfect but it's still a fun, fast-paced adventure that offers a refreshing sense of drama in a series that's otherwise full of slapstick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Do not watch this movie with children. Unlike other Asterix movies, this one has serious issues with tone, mixing the known comical hijinx with sinister topics that are not handled well. Don't believe me? Well, there is an attempted rape scene in there, as well as a scene in which Asterix nearly drowns. Several scenes end with the insinuation that Idefix might be about to die (through drowning/falling/being impaled). If you want to watch a good Asterix movie, go and grab "Asterix and Cleopatra". This movie, on the other hand, should better be forgotten. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review duncan p The Asterix film I am probably most familiar with from my childhood, so a bit hard to evaluate in relation to the others. It's basically the Asterix take on all the various sword-and-sandal classics, and pretty straightforward as far as films in the series go, and is one of the more serious and less silly entries. Fun as an adventure, even if a bit light on the gags (bar one rather large one towards the end), it's still recommended for being a lot more entertaining than opening entries to the film series were. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This came out nine years after the last movie adaptation and eight years after the death of writer René Goscinny. It's mostly based on "Asterix the Legionary" and "Asterix the Gladiator" and in my opinion a little decline over the first three films, excluding the animation of course.
