Critics Consensus

Astronaut can't quite escape the gravitational pull of its story's sentimental overtones, but Richard Dreyfuss keeps the film in a pleasantly diverting orbit.

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) For a film about the joy and value of expanding your horizons, whatever your age, its outlook is irksomely blinkered. Rated: 2/5 Nov 27, 2020 Full Review Danny Leigh Financial Times Dreyfuss remains as fine-tuned and charming an actor as he did the first time he stared longingly up at the heavens. Rated: 3/5 May 6, 2020 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Ultimately, I believed in this character, whose dreams were so obviously unfulfillable...I thought that worked rather well. May 4, 2020 Full Review Dallas King Flick Feast Richard Dreyfuss certainly proves that at the age of 72, he still has “The Right Stuff” with an out of this world performance that will move you to tears. A heart-warming tale of never given up on your dreams. Rated: 4/5 Nov 10, 2022 Full Review Lindsay Traves Nightmarish Conjurings A sweet story of an old man struggling with the feeling of outliving his own usefulness. Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Makes some obvious choices that prevent it from fully taking flight - a dance sequence at the nursing home is particularly awful - but has enough to say about aging and following your dreams to earn it a look for family audiences. Devils A Not a great movie, too many plot holes, the film is so sentimental that I had to give it at least *3* star review!!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/07/22 Full Review Audience Member LOL, the greatest Richard Dreyfuss movie ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A charming movie, with an emotive story and a great performance from Richard Dreyfuss. Well done to Shelagh McLeod, the director. Loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A descent movie. Nothing to write rave reviews but Dreyfuss does it well and really makes it seem believable. Good job Richard!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member What an uplifting film! Exactly what we need as an antidote to 2020. A sweet but not syrupy meditation on ageing, loneliness and the importance of family, with the overarching theme of never giving up on your dreams. As an old man bent on getting a ride in a space ship, Richard Dreyfuss hasn't been this good in years. This film really pulled an incredible performance out of him, but he wasn't the only one - the acting was superb across the board, with a special shout out to Krista Bridges who gives a stunning performance as Dreyfuss's daughter, trying to keep the family together and to keep the men in her life from self-imploding. There's a scene between her and her father that had me sobbing in the cinema - so much is said, with so few words, about their love. A testament to the nuanced writing as well as the acting. Watch this one with your parents, your kids, or anyone who needs to come away from the TV or cinema feeling hopeful and inspired. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Astronaut is a cute little film about hope. Richard Dreyfuss gives a great performance in the film that deals lot with about family issues, nursing homes in achieving your dreams. It’s a predictable film and corney in a few spots and it’s a smaller film it’s worth checking out. Nothing groundbreaking here just a small easy to watch little indie film.
