J. Hoberman The New York Review of Books Ripe... a guilty pleasure of mine... Aug 14, 2020 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy Some delightfully campy idiocy typical of the genre, with that extra spin of dazzling showmanship that separated Corman from all of his peers. Rated: 7/10 Jun 20, 2015 Full Review Rob Humanick Suite101.com Smarter than you'd be right in expecting a movie called Attack of the Crab Monsters to be, and this is in part because the crabs themselves are that much smarter, too. Rated: 4/5 Jul 7, 2011 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) A truly weird, even surreal film that offers more evidence that dehumanization -- whether by mutation, takeover, identity transference, transformation or insanity -- is Corman's great theme... ZD K Another Roger Corman Gem!! Love it for its pure camp, great atmosphere and a fine cast that includes Russell Johnson, pretty n sexy Pamela Duncan and Richard Garland. I think those who criticism of this film either never grew up in the 1950's or are expecting Star Wars special effects!. This was filmed in 1957 before cell phones , personal computers and CGI. It's a fun story of Giant crabs 🦀 ( thanks to atomic radiation) who kill you and absorb your intelligence and/,,or your mind and set out to take over the world!! Pure escapism indeed! It's now on BLU RAY and the visual quality is excellent and it's soundtrack is clear and well done! It's a true classic 50's SCI FI I highly recommend!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Ben G Awesome movie to watch with the kids Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/13/23 Full Review Monsol E Surprisingly high-concept monsters, considering they're crabs. Was a bit slow, but fun. Where else can you see crabs dynamite an island, while threatening people thru candlesticks? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Matthew D One of the weirdest atomic age monster movies and one of the best. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/21 Full Review Audience Member Giant crabs created by, what else? radiation. And they're pissed, probably a byproduct of the humans they've eaten who didn't go willingly. As per usual in these 50s-60s sci-fi alien / monster films, the scientists and military have to figure out a way to defeat the monsters / aliens. The crabs are hilarious with their human eyes and limited flexibility, the acting weak at best, and the drama supplied by frightened, screaming women and consumed humans. I'm guessing this was written by a pre-PETA animal lover who just got tired of watching those nasty humans eating all those innicent crabs. Good for a laugh, but that's about it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Crabs able to lure people to their death using the voices of their digested victims is an intriguing idea but Roger Corman could not pull it off. The crabs moved very slowly and stiffly and it was impossible not to laugh when they started talking, taunting their intended prey as they advanced, making an unpleasant crunching noise. The "science" used to explain the monsters is silly and farfetched even for a 50s sci-fi movie and the characters act so stupidly, it's sometimes difficult to follow what's going on. It does benefit from being short, though, and because of this it wastes no time getting to some crab action. The quick pace, paired with some unintentional laughs, keeps it from being completely unenjoyable to watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
