What to Know

Critics Consensus

At once playfully eccentric and poignantly bittersweet, Attenberg adds a refreshing sideways spin to the arthouse coming-of-age drama.

Kjerstin Johnson Bitch Media The film never feels male gaze-y, and it's refreshing to watch sex and nudity that's awkward (like life off-screen) and even a bit silly. Jan 11, 2021 Full Review Nicolas Rapold Film Comment Magazine For all the eccentricity, the film feels unexpectedly personal in addressing experiences everyone goes through at some point in their lives. Jun 28, 2013 Full Review Walter V. Addiego San Francisco Chronicle Tsangari's art-house minimalism, which never lets us forget we're watching a movie, still permits a surprising degree of tender emotion. Rated: 3/4 Apr 20, 2012 Full Review Ard Vijn ScreenAnarchy "Attenberg" is a nice, gentle and at times pretty funny drama. Don't expect to be bowled over but there is a good chance you'll be impressed. Jan 15, 2020 Full Review Derek Smith Tiny Mix Tapes Attenberg doesn't have a sense of true purpose and cohesion. Oct 4, 2017 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy An incisive study of a marvelously unusual protagonist. Rated: 9/10 Jul 10, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

Ian S An odd but real take on self discovery. Maybe we're all the odd ones, not living these childlike fantasy? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Spite of the wirdness plaguin the director's style, this story opens an unseen window to coming-on-age stories, and the result is a hillarious, smart, eccentric, well acted and deeply touching film that, using its original source material as fuel, becomes personal and near for the viewer. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review dan m This is a very strange indie type movie that I'm not sure I fully understood. You got the main character, this asexual virgin who's spending time with her dying dad in the hospital and then the other time is spent with her equally strange friend. It's a bizarre and slow movie. Acting is good I suppose. But yes, very weird. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I can understand the director's point but still I was not impressed. Especially not with the problematic situations that hide behind a plot hole (I know the film is surrealist but so what?). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Only the last scene had an impact on me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member No la entendi mucho,no es una peli de mi estilo realmente 5/10 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
