Xan Brooks Independent (UK) The startling imagery and elegant atmosphere make up for the drama's lack of rigour. Audience Member "Un 32 août sur terre", Denis Villeneuve's debut is interesting if inessential. The photography and editing have quite a few inspired moments (dude likes his deserts), the acting is fine, the dialogues are mostly unpretentious, there's some good humour here and there and the will-they-won't-they dynamics keep the viewer on their toes. On the other hand, it lacks big moments, probably because the script doesn't go very deep in the characters, and the ending feels like a cop-out. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A pretty interesting first film from Denis Villeneuve which has some appealing wide shots that Villeneuve became famous for throughout his career. However, the story and script were not as captivating and, for me, this is his weakest film from the ones I have seen. I was mildly amused by the two main characters journey to Utah to have a baby, but I didn't learn much about their lives at all. Nothing of note or of much interest happened during this journey to Utah. I suppose they did come to the realisation that they cared for each other at the end of the journey which Simone accepted after Philippe's assault. I just wish they were scenes which explored each character's backgrounds more thoroughly and also included some information regarding Philippe's relationship with Juliette. Overall, a film with aesthetically appealing cinematography and great acting which could have been much more captivating with a tighter and more emotional script. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Fra B Makes you wish Villeneuve would go back to making independent little movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/26/21 Full Review jorge c Un 32 août sut terre, the first film of Denis Villeneuve. I will start with the style of the director which is present, but it feels very different to anything else. The photography was interesting and careful, it had a combination between long shots and a sudden cuts, this ones sometimes were well, once and again were very destabilized. About the script, I have not words to describe this, in a good way and in a bad way. A bizarre story which you can try to assemble some puzzles with the events that happens, but this ones are so much different each others. So, you can't really understand what did you just watch, but it leaves you a lot to think about. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member [⭐️68%] Even in his earliest work, Denis Villeneuve really shows what a fantastic director he is with some impressive shots and moments for a directors first movie. While the fantastic cinematography and solid acting does capture you attention for a bit, the story doesn't exactly hold up compared to some of Villeneuve's other work. The general story doesn't feel like something which could easily be translated into a satisfying final product. Not down to translating to English, August 32nd on Earth (1998) leaves many unsatisfying unanswered questions and does gloss over certain aspects which realistically would require more thought, but the captivating visuals and good chemistry amongst leads Pascale Bussieres and Alexis Martin allow the viewer to maintain interest for the whole 90 minutes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Villeneuve still has a lot of growing to do, but the pieces are certainly there.
